A Sheffield Hallam University led social mobility partnership focused on improving educational attainment and raising aspiration, particularly in disadvantaged areas.
A collaborative enterprise, South Yorkshire Futures does not seek to substitute existing or planned initiatives. Rather, it seeks to bring more joined-up leadership across the region, building on excellent work already being undertaken.
Sheffield Hallam University is proud of its position at the heart of its city and region. Already renowned for the quality of our teacher training provision and outreach activities aimed at raising aspirations of our young people, the University is seeking to help address the challenges faced in improving the life chances of all our young people.
Through South Yorkshire Futures, the University invites partners to build a shared vision for the role of education in improving social mobility; raising standards of attainment at every age and stage; providing a framework for enhancing school leadership; and supporting improved progression of young people into further education, higher education and work.
The programme has the support of the Department for Education, the Regional Schools Commissioner and other key partners. We want to see as many partners as possible involved in the programme, all working together to improve outcomes for young people across our region.
Across South Yorkshire, there are fabulous schools and outstanding teachers, but the data tells a challenging story: the young people of South Yorkshire are less likely to achieve good GCSEs, less likely to remain in education and have fewer life opportunities than their peers in other parts of the country. We owe it to our young people to give them the very best start in life.
Around the world, there is good evidence that concerted action can make a difference. But that concerted action depends on some key building blocks being in place: ambition for all, honesty about the challenges, a commitment to succeed and a willingness to co-operate to make a difference.
South Yorkshire Futures is a sign of Sheffield Hallam's commitment to the region. It marks a step change in the University's mission to lead locally and to work with others who share a commitment to achieving the very best. That's not because the University has all the answers: it doesn't. But it is dedicated to working with others to make a positive difference, working in an open and inclusive way, drawing on individuals and groups across the region who share our ambition for success. We are determined that South Yorkshire Futures will make a difference and are pleased that the Government has recognised that this social mobility partnership is a genuinely new initiative and worth supporting
