What is South Yorkshire Futures?

An area-based programme of work convened by Sheffield Hallam University and backed by the Department for Education which will contribute to the government’s agenda for social mobility through:

  • Building a shared vision for the role of education in improving social mobility in South Yorkshire
  • Raising standards of attainment across South Yorkshire
  • Supporting improved progression into higher education and work
  • Building evidence and lesson learning for DfE and to share with other regions

Principles for South Yorkshire Futures

  1. There is a need for a co-ordination framework in order to give shape and structure to individual initiatives.
  2. There is a need to build on, but also to extend, existing programmes of work.
  3. There is a need to work with existing stakeholders, including MATs, RSCs, Ofsted, TSAs and local authorities; but also to co-ordinate and shape local initiatives better.
  4. There is a need for better local and regional data management and analysis which is able to identify areas of strength and need, and to link between the two.
  5. In an area of policy where initiatives are common, there is a need to sharpen focus and streamline learning

South Yorkshire Futures will provide an overall structure for coherent improvement through three strands of intervention (Early Years, Performance, Aspiration) delivering coordinated action broadly structured around different life stages.
