Who are we?
Led by Sheffield Hallam University and backed by the Department for Education, South Yorkshire Futures draws together key stakeholders and partners from education, business and politics, including the Regional Schools Commissioner, local authorities, Multi-Academy Trusts, local MPs, Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership, Teaching School Alliances and employers.
The core South Yorkshire Futures team is led from Sheffield Hallam University by experts in education, widening participation and skills, working in collaboration with partners from schools, colleges, employers, local authorities and other education-related settings.
University Leadership Team Sponsor - Richard Calvert
Richard is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategy & Operations) at Sheffield Hallam University. He is the University Leadership member accountable for the delivery of the programme. He is responsible for managing regional and national strategic relationships for the programme.
He was previously Director General for Strategy and Resources at the Department for Education, and before that Director General for Finance and Corporate Performance at the Department for International Development.

Director - Greg Burke
Greg is a teacher recruitment and retention expert, having spent most of his career working for the Department for Education (DfE) and the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
Greg joined South Yorkshire Futures from the Department for Education as the Programme Director. Previously to this post, he worked as Deputy Director of Performance and Analysis at the National College for Teaching & Leadership.
Greg is also Director of the Civic University Network.

Academic Lead - Professor Sam Twiselton
Sam is the Academic Lead for South Yorkshire Futures.
Sam is the Director of The Sheffield Institute of Education at Sheffield Hallam University.

Strategic Lead for Early Years - Sally Pearse
Sally leads the Early Years strand of South Yorkshire Futures.
Sally is also Head of Early Years Education (0-5) at Sheffield Hallam University.

Strategic Lead for Performance - Sue O'Brien
Sue is the lead for the Performance strand of South Yorkshire Futures.
Sue is also a senior member of the Sheffield Institute of Education Leadership Group at Sheffield Hallam University.
Strategic Leads for Aspiration - Cathy Sinclair and Carol Castle
Cathy and Carol lead the Aspiration strand of South Yorkshire Futures.
Cathy and Carol are also Co-Directors of Student Recruitment and Admissions at Sheffield Hallam University.
The Stakeholder Group
As well as an experienced core team, South Yorkshire Futures is governed and guided by some of the region’s most experienced education specialists through its Stakeholder Group. Group members represent a diverse range of organisations, including;
- partner schools
- colleges
- employers
- local authorities
- voluntary organisations
The Stakeholder group meets regularly to ensure the successful delivery of the South Yorkshire Futures programme.
Our Partners
The South Yorkshire Futures programme is designed as a partnership between organisations with a stake in improving the educational attainment and raising aspirations of young people in the South Yorkshire region. The programme encompasses collaborative activity with a wide range of partners, including;
- The National Collaborative Outreach Programme funded Higher Education Progression Partnership South Yorkshire (HEPPSY+)
- The Higher Education Progression Partnership, funded by Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield, to provide impartial support in transition to Higher Education across the Sheffield City Region
- The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP)
- The Sheffield Children’s University
- Partnerships for Attainment Management Executive
We also work collaboratively with many other partners in our goal to improve educational aspiration and attainment across our region.
